   Pick any experience or event with a date and a time. In the calendar, a gold dot marks the dates people are already going on. Pick one of those if you would rather not be first.

   Book it

   Your group opens the moment the booking is confirmed.

   Start the group

   One tap on your booking confirmation. You become its starter, and you get a link that opens on that exact date and time.

   Bring people along

   Share it however you like: WhatsApp, in the hostel, on the beach. Everyone who books that session after you earns you 5% of what they pay.

If you turned up on your own

Most people who come to Varkala alone are not looking for a tour. They are looking for the bit that comes after the tour - somebody to get a coffee with on the cliff afterwards, or to split an auto with to the next beach. That part is normally down to luck, a hostel common room, and how good you are at starting conversations with strangers.

A Circle is the small version of that, arranged in advance. When you book a session, the group is the people booked onto that same session - the same morning, the same boat, the same class. Not a city-wide chat and not a friend request: a handful of people who are about to spend two hours doing the same thing you are, who you can message before you go so that nobody arrives cold.

What it is not

It is not a social network and there is no feed. You opt in after you book, so nobody is listed anywhere by having paid for something. You can be in a Circle and say nothing at all - plenty of people do, read what is going on, and turn up. The group closes a couple of days after the trip, because a group about Tuesday morning has nothing to say by Friday.

And it can be quiet. A session that has just gone live might be you and one other person, which is still one more than doing it alone. On the calendar, a gold dot marks the dates that already have people on them - pick one of those if you would rather not be first.

When it does not apply

Four cases, and they are here rather than in the small print.

• Bookings made with a promo code

  A discounted booking has already had its margin spent.

• Your own booking

  You do not earn from the seat you bought yourself.

• Bookings made before you started the group

  You earn from the people who come after you, not the ones already there.
